Keyboard and gamepad controls are both fully customisable. There are Inactive Play and Inactive Sound settings, for instance, which determines whether the game tracks your inputs/plays audio even when it’s not the active window.ĭon’t panic. Most of the stuff is what you’d expect (volume settings, camera rotation speeds, etc.) but there are a couple of nods to the PC audience. Things fare better outside of the visuals, though. It’s not tremendously scaleable, and that’s rather disappointing.

There’s Anti-Aliasing up to 8x, Texture Filtering up to 16x, Blur, Ambient Occlusion, High/Low Effects, and High/Medium/Low Shadows. Happily, there’s an option to select which monitor you want the game displayed on.Īs for raw visuals… eh. Windowed and Fullscreen are both supported, although Borderless Windowed is apparently missing in action. Resolutions go from 640×480 to 5120×2880 with a wide range (no pun intended) of aspect ratios supported, which is decent. On the disappointing side of things are the visual options, which you can see below. PC-specific options are a mixed bag, with some disappointments but a few genuinely pleasant surprises.

Once again, we’re looking at this through the technical lens of my i7-3820 with 16GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 970, which should give you an idea of performance.

So, one 45GB download later, let’s take a look at how NieR: Automata is handled by the PC. Controlling the camera and trying to aim your gunfire and trying to play a Devil May Cry-esque action beat-’em-up is a tough ask for pretty much any controller, but maybe – just maybe – it would improve on PC. If I had one issue with the PlayStation 4 version, though, it’s that the controls are a teeny bit rough.

It’s the sort of good game that some people are going to hate, and some will wonder why on Earth anyone thinks it’s good it’s going to be divisive, and I’ll be discussing that in the full review. In fact, I went through and finished NieR: Automata on the PlayStation 4 a week or so ago. NieR itself was a tremendously weird game, and the prospect of seeing what came after was a very, very exciting one. You could probably do this for Dante too if you want, but I found swordmaster moves on the left hand to be really awkward.Īnyway that's just what worked for me, experiment and get a feel for it yourself.Saying that I’ve had high hopes for NieR: Automata is a bit of an understatement. Gun switch set to L1: only button left, feels comfortable to hit both shoulder buttons while shot-cancelling.įor Vergil I tried swapping style and gun switch, so that your trick is on the left hand, and you can tap Triangle/Circle to scroll through your weapons easily. I find it comfortable to mash the shoulder button on a DS4, depending on the controller you use this might not be a good option. Gun attack set to R1: this allows you to charge guns easily. You can give it the occasional tap in between attacks, and you can still hit it while buffering a style move. Weapon switch set to Circle: another weird one but my logic is you're not really going to be hitting weapon switch while you need to attack with Square, and you're never going to need to hold down the switch button either. Style set to Triangle: makes it easier to buffer style inputs while attacking with your weapon, which is key for gunslinger moves and the like. Weapon attack set to Square: I mainly do this so that jump cancels are easier. Jump set to X: don't fix what ain't broke. It can be weird using your middle fingers on a controller but by having simple inputs like lock-on and DT, you're not going to be mashing those buttons. Think of your left hand as movement, and your right hand as actions, so to do a stinger instead of thinking "right hand lock-on, left hand forward, right hand attack", you're thinking "left hand lock-on and forward, right hand attack", seems like a subtle difference but your brain will appreciate the change.ĭevil Trigger set to R2: you're going to want to hold down DT a lot to get DTEs and this puts it out of the way. Lock-on in DMC is very important as a movement option and I find that controlling lock-on with the same hand that controls movement makes everything feel a lot smoother. Lock-on set to L2: this is probably the weirdest change I made but once you get used to it it's extremely comfortable. When I used a dualshock, this was my layout (with middle fingers on R2/L2): If not, you might want to get comfortable with putting your middle fingers on the triggers, this allows you to buffer extra inputs and makes figuring out your button layout a lot easier. Ideally you would want to use a controller with back buttons.

This game is definitely designed with a controller in mind.
